Today’s challenge is to rework democracy, so that it operates as it was first conceived.

In Australia and elsewhere, electoral systems promote petty partisan politics, where adversarial debate for its own sake overwhelms deliberation and good government.

We need to reconsider the way our democracy works so that we put people back into politics and good sense back into government.

We need to move away from celebrity campaigning and populist politics; we need to reinvent our parliaments, so that trust and deliberation are the norm, rather than the exception.
